How to Plan Your Wedding at Work (Without Getting Fired)Planning your wedding can be time consuming. Finding ways to steal time at work can be tempting. Knowing the culture and rules of your employer is important if you wish to plan your wedding at work. Those who fail to heed this warning have the potential to damage their reputation at work and potentially lose their job.
Almost every job has down time. This generally is a result of waiting, on the phone, for other employees to finish a task, or for machines to perform a function. Finishing any other work tasks while you are waiting should be a priority if you do not wish to get fired. Sometimes, there is little else to do during these waiting periods. This is when careful couples find their safe wedding planning opportunities. There are many dull wedding tasks that require time but not much thinking. Writing addresses on thank you notes, putting labels on envelopes, filling out table cards, and thousands of other small tasks all are perfect for these moments. Create a folder or an unobtrusive portfolio to carry your wedding tasks in that can easily be put away when the waiting period ends. Do not be blatant about your actions. This is not the reason you want to draw attention to yourself at work. In fact, with the expense of a wedding you do want to draw positive attention for your work, you could use a raise. Never assume you will not be the one the boss decides to make the example. There is a way to be a great employee and plan your wedding at work. Doing so requires intelligent choices, focusing on long term employment goals, and balancing your challenges. The planning involved is not difficult. Again it comes to knowing your companies policies and procedures. Review the rules regarding personal computer use, texting, palm pilots, and conducting personal business during work hours. You will notice I did not list phone calls. Some companies are more open than others regarding personal calls. Think about the perception you create by having vendors call you at work for long consultations. It can be hard to know for certain when you will be available to have those conversations. Set a time when you can call them and arrange a break time that leaves you free to make those arrangements with a cell phone in private. Handle as many details as you can by e-mail or texts that you can read without being noticed. This will help you to stay under the radar of those in the office who like to spread gossip that can be harmful to your career. Remember the goal is to plan your wedding at work without getting fired. It is hard to argue with success. If the boss can verify your contributions at work, the petty complaints of others will hold less weight. | ||
